The five limbs, in one paragraph each
A panchanga (“five limbs”) describes a day by five values. Two come from the angle between the Moon and the Sun, one from the Moon alone, one from the Sun and Moon together, and one from the calendar.
- Tithi
- The lunar day: each time the Moon gains another 12° on the Sun, a new tithi begins. There are 30 in a lunar month, from Shukla Pratipada after the new Moon to Amavasya. In the sample above it is Krishna Ekadashi (26 of 30).
- Vara
- The weekday, counted from one sunrise to the next and named after its graha: Ravivara (Sun) to Shanivara (Saturn). That is why the Panchang shows a “sunrise-based day”: before sunrise, the traditional day still belongs to the previous date.
- Nakshatra
- Which of the 27 lunar mansions — equal 13°20′ divisions of the sidereal zodiac — the Moon is in. It changes roughly once a day; in the sample the Moon is in Purva Phalguni, pada 2.
- Yoga
- The sidereal longitudes of the Sun and the Moon added together and divided into 27 parts. It has nothing to do with yoga practice or with planetary combinations in a chart. Sample: Indra.
- Karana
- Half a tithi (6° of Moon–Sun separation), so there are 60 in a month: seven movable karanas repeat eight times and four fixed ones sit around the new Moon. Sample: Bava.
Two related times are often printed beside them. Rahu Kaal is one eighth of the daylight, chosen by the weekday. The hora divides daylight and night into twelve unequal parts each, ruled in the Chaldean order of the grahas; the Today instrument shows the current one.
Choghadiya divides daylight and night into eight equal parts each, about an hour and a half near the equinoxes. Each part takes one of seven names in an order set by the weekday: Amrit, Shubh and Labh are counted good, Chal neutral, and Udveg, Rog and Kaal inauspicious. Because Rahu Kaal is also an eighth of the daylight, it always coincides with one of the day’s choghadiyas. Beside Rahu Kaal, the live Panchang shows the choghadiya in effect with the one before and the next two, and all sixteen on request; every timing row carries a grade from Best to Worst, written out and shown with an icon as well as a colour.
At the moment, or at sunrise?
Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are continuous: they can change at any minute of the day or night. Calendars therefore name a day by the values in effect at local sunrise, and print the time each one ends. The live Panchang keeps the two apart — “At the selected moment” versus “For this sunrise-based day” — so you never mix values evaluated at different times.
Because a tithi lasts anywhere from about 20 to 27 hours, a day can occasionally contain two tithi changes (the middle tithi never touches a sunrise and is called kshaya, “lost”), or one tithi can span two sunrises (vriddhi, “increased”). The tithi explainer shows real cases from the next month.
The instant a tithi or nakshatra ends is the same everywhere on Earth; only the clock reading changes with the time zone. Sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kaal, the hora and the choghadiyas depend on the city.

How this Panchang is calculated
- Positions: astronomy-engine 2.1.19 (geocentric apparent Sun and Moon), checked against NASA JPL Horizons.
- Sunrise and sunset: the Sun’s upper limb on the horizon with standard atmospheric refraction, at the city’s coordinates (sea level).
- Sidereal zodiac: Lahiri ayanamsha as a linear model (23.8531° at J2000.0 plus 50.29″ a year), within about an arcminute of published Lahiri tables. Tithi and karana do not depend on it; nakshatra and yoga do.
- Choghadiya: daylight and night each in eight equal parts, named by the standard weekday tables (as printed by Drik Panchang); before sunrise, the night choghadiyas of the previous sunrise-based day.
- Time zones: IANA rules for each city, daylight saving included. The Panchang never reads your device’s location.
- Range: 1 January 1900 to 31 December 2100.
The website compares its own results with an independent published panchanga. On 28 city-and-date combinations across 13 cities (including daylight-saving changes in London, New York and Sydney), every tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana name matched Drik Panchang; sunrise and sunset agreed within 0.6 minutes, nakshatra endings within 0.7, yoga endings within 1.5, tithi and karana endings within 2.3, and Rahu Kaal within 0.6. The remaining differences come from different lunar theories, ayanamsha tables and rounding. Near a boundary they can change which value a minute belongs to, so treat ending times as good to a few minutes.
Panchangas are a tradition with regional variants. Festival and fasting dates follow further rules — the month system (amanta or purnimanta), whether the tithi must hold at sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight, and local custom. The observance calendars list Ekadashi, Purnima and Amavasya by the sunrise rule and say where traditions differ; for other festivals, follow your own tradition or temple calendar.
