How the dates are chosen
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun, so it begins and ends at the same instant everywhere; what differs is which day it names. Purnima and Amavasya are listed on the day whose local sunrise is inside the tithi; their vrat days can follow other rules (moonrise, evening or midday), so the tithi times are shown in full.
Ekadashi has its own rules, because the fast must be broken (parana) during Dwadashi, the next tithi. Smarta calendars keep it on the day whose sunrise falls in Ekadashi; when Ekadashi holds at two sunrises, on the second, as long as Dwadashi still reaches the sunrise after it; and when Dwadashi would end before the sunrise after the fast, on the day before. Vaishnava calendars also require Ekadashi at arunodaya (96 minutes before sunrise) and move the fast to Dwadashi when Dwadashi holds at two sunrises, so on some dates they fast a day later; each calendar shows both days then. Applied to Bengaluru, these rules give the same Smarta and Vaishnava dates and names as a widely used published calendar for every Ekadashi of 2026 and 2027.
Major festivals such as Diwali, Navratri or Maha Shivaratri follow further, region-specific rules and are not listed until those rules are implemented and checked.
